Uniform and Equipment of the
Recreated 7th Regiment of Foot or
Royal Fuziliers
The following is a list of clothing and accoutrements which every member of Helyar’s Company is expected to acquire. Upon joining, members will be provided with a more robust version of the company’s sealed pattern. This sealed pattern includes the specific materials, construction techniques and suppliers for each item of kit. All items must be hand finished.
Only items from the listed suppliers are to be used, no exceptions!
Uniform:
Cocked Hat: There are 2 styles of cocked hat currently required. They must be blocked round.
The 1773 – 1778 period cocked hat features white cocking loops, white band with tassels, regimental button, white loops to secure a cockade, a horsehair cockade, and a small black ostrich feather.
The 1779 – 1783 period cocked hat has white cocking loops, white band with tassels, regimental button, white loop to secure cockade, horsehair cockade, and white lace binding the edge of the hat.
Regimental Coat: Constructed of Kochan-Phillips madder red broadcloth, with royal blue facings. Lined with natural white bays. Two red shoulder straps bound with regimental lace. All buttonholes spaced evenly and bound with regimental lace folded in the “reverse hammerhead” style.
Waistcoat: Constructed of Kochan-Phillips natural white broadcloth front and back, and unlined. 10 to 12 buttons depending on height. Two welted pockets, right one functional, left one false.
Shirt: Two white linen shirts. Each shirt is to have a breast ruffle, two buttons at the neck, and narrow wrist bands closed with thread buttons. A check linen shirt of only company approved check pattern constructed like the white linen shirt, but without chest ruffle.
Roller: Three black linen rollers; one per shirt.
Neck stock: Horsehair neck stock with brass clasp and false white linen collar.
Gaitored Trousers: Two pair of trousers are required; one for summer and one for winter. The summer issue trousers are constructed of natural colored Russia drill fabric and feature metal buttons. The winter trousers are constructed of brown wool and feature domed black horn buttons.
Fatigue Cap: Constructed according to the company pattern. Red, close fitting body with large ear flaps and blue front plate with white “7”.
Stockings: Two pair of knit wool stockings.
Shoes: Straight last, rough-out shoes with plain brass buckle.
Accoutrements:
Musket: Short Land pattern musket with rack number engraved on escutcheon plate with properly fitted bayonet.
Waist belt: Buff leather belt patterned after surviving belt of the 21st RoF. Brass plate engraved with a script “RF.” Black leather bayonet scabbard secured to frog so bayonet faces inward.
Cartridge Pouch: Patterned after 50th Rof pouch, 29-hole hand constructed with buff leather sling and no ornament on the flap.
Haversack: Natural linen haversack with two brass buttons and government stamp on body.
Canteen: Tin plated iron canteen with domed top and metal cap hung on hemp rope sling. (Absolutely no stainless steel!)
Knapsack: Isaac Royal House pattern knapsack with buff leather straps
Blanket: Reproduction British military blanket
Additional Suggested Items:
Breeches: KP natural white wool, 2 large regimental buttons at waist, 2 small regimental buttons for fall, and 4 small regimental buttons to close knee placket, 1 small to close kneeband.
Gaitors: Black wool, peaked in back, 7 domed horn buttons and leather instep strap.
Leggings: Black wool, reaching to mid-thigh with gusset and 5 small black domed horn buttons at ankle and leather instep strap.
Greatcoat: Dark blue kersey wool. 8 domed black horn buttons down front, 1 at each side vent, narrow cape reaching only to the shoulder seam.
Blanket sling: Hemp webbing construction.
Utensils: Tin cup, wood, horn or metal spoon, pocket knife.
