Battalion Company Sergeant's Undress Uniform, 1773-1775
When in the field, the bearskin caps of the Royal Fusiliers were kept in storage, in Ft. Chambley, where they were captured in November, 1775. In place of the expensive fusilier and grenadier caps, the men wore less expensive, unlaced cocked hats. The Battalion and Grenadier Company Sergeants' hats were trimmed with silver cocking loops, silver bands with tassels, and a silver loop and button to secure the cockade.
In the field, in addition to wearing a cocked hat, waistbelts were frequently worn slung over the shoulder. This was believed this not only allowed the men greater comfort, but was better for their health.
