Battalion Company Sergeant's Parade Dress Uniform, 1773-1775
When the Royal Fusiliers arrived in Canada in 1773, they brought with them the bearskin fusilier and grenadier caps which had been purchased by Lord Robert Bertie in 1770. These caps were typically kept in storage due to their high cost. They were generally reserved only for the most formal occasions, such as guard duty and inspections. In November of 1775, the regiment's caps were all captured when Fort Chambley was taken by the Rebels. The caps were not replaced until 1785, well after the regiment had returned to England.
Sergeants of the Royal Fusiliers were provided with black bear fur caps featuring a Tudor rose, crown, and garter embroidered in white silk on the the back, and silver cords with tassels. The uniform coat was made of a brighter scarlet wool than the enlisted me. The buttonhole loops were plain white wool tape. The coat was trimmed with two white silk epaulets and silver buttons. Befitting his rank, sergeants were also issued leather gloves.
The sergeant's waistbelt was of the same pattern worn by the enlisted men. It featured a single scabbard for the bayonet. New brass belt plates had been purchased in 1770. They were engraved with a simple Arabic "7." Fusilier Sergeants were issued Sergeant of Grenadiers Carbines in 1770, thus did not carry a halberds or swords.
